This post is part of #the100dayproject that encourages creatives to do an action every day for 100 days. I've chosen to write an article or blog post every day. Previous posts for this project can be found here.
I saw National Burrito Day was trending on social media (seriously, who comes up with this sh*t), and Ramona Tejada immediately came to mind. If you have ever stepped foot in Marfa, you know Tejada is known for Marfa Burrito.
It's such a simple idea. You walk in. You order a burrito from her modest menu. You pour yourself a cup of water or coffee while you wait. You hand her cash (she doesn't accept credit cards) and you get a burrito that usually lasts for two meal (at least for me).
I never spend more than $10 there, if that, and she's gotten the approval of Kevin Bacon, Faith Hill, Mark Ruffalo and Matthew McConaughey, who all have photos with her on the walls.
I used to walk past her place every morning to work and now I live a block from her. Lemme tell ya, it's dangerous. I can always smell what's cooking in her kitchen from my door. My dog has tried to drag me over there many times during our walks because he wants what she's having.
Every time I walk in, she's immediately smile and yells “Hola chica!” or “La reina!” I personally love the second greeting because I am down with anyone associating me with royalty. Sure, she probably refers to a lot of ladies as queens, but I'm gonna take it. I find myself holding my head up high ready to take on the world every time I leave Marfa Burrito.
My go-to order is the Primo burrito which is a homemade flour tortilla stuffed with beans, potatoes, onions, tomatoes, salsa and cheese. It's got a kick to it which makes it so good. I've never confirmed it, but I assume it's named after Primo Carrasco, who is a local fixture with those mutton chops.
A few months ago, I ordered a Primo burrito from Carrasco's wife, Ana, while his Tejano hour was broadcasting on Marfa Public Radio inside the restaurant.
It was so f*cking meta that it was borderline ridiculous, but that's Marfa for you.
